We have forgotten one fundamental truth; that all things are connected in nature, therefore what affects one will eventually affect another. We have unwittingly endangered both ourselves and our younger cousins through our actions; through our enthusiasm to beat nature at the survival game, and our subsequent, growing encroachment on all the different habitats around the globe. This danger, you will see, if you take the time to look around, is very real and we need to take a step back and re-connect with what is truly important.
Survival is no longer just about the individual, it is about the species. If this generation of man survives in luxury and comfort, but the next does not what has been accomplished? The fact is an alarming number of our younger cousins are going extinct every day, and many are being added to the endangered list even as this is being written. The oceans are becoming acidic and the air so poisoned that more and more people are developing breathing difficulties. Global warming is causing drought and famine. The list of the consequences of our actions goes on and on.
Yet there is still hope. We can still act to reverse some of the damage, if not all of it, with persistence, insistence, determination and education. As individuals we do not have the power to affect this change except in our immediate surroundings and in leading through example, but with all united and of one mind, anything is possible. This is what the environmental messengers are trying to teach us. We need to listen, learn, understand and act in unison in order to turn things around.
